Matrix Nikey *update

page29_1
Earlier this week I posted a picture of what I think to be one of the most beautiful XC bikes I have seen.

The Matrix ‘Nikey’ is a really well crafted frame , just what we have come to expect from the people at Tank Cycles. Everything about the design really shows lots of care and attention went in to creating it. The Nikey is even named after the engineer who originally made it.

The frame is all alloy with custom made tubing. It’s available in either 16 inch or 18 inch and comes complete with headset and seatpost.

The price? 15000 NTD which is about 3500 RMB frame only (this is only an estimate contact supplier for up to date pricing) and they are available now.

If you are in mainland China and fancy a Nikey contact 吳亞模 : wymbike@263.net

Project Cheap Bike: part 1
Project: CHEAP BIKE. Part 1.

Spring-cleaning! I don’t like cleaning at the best of times, but when it’s a full fledged clean your home from top to bottom, empty all the cupboards and even clean behind the back of the toilet I feel even less motivated to grab the mop and duster. Well these things need to be done I suppose, where to start though? Ah, Ill ‘clean’ (look) through my hoard of old useless and broken bike parts.

I think all mountain bikers are the same when it comes to old parts, we don’t throw them away, ‘You never know when this might come in handy!’
page26_1page26_2

page26_3

So here I am sorting my bolts and random spokes and I start to think ‘I probably have all the parts here to build another bike ‘ Spring-cleaning comes to an abrupt end and I start emptying boxes of dirty oily parts on the table.

So what did I find?

Two 36-spoke wheels. The rims are no good but the hubs are ok and they have disc mounts.
Two tyres.
An Acera rear mech
A pair of DNM suspension forks.
An 8-speed cassette.
A Shimano HG70 chain.
About 3 brake discs.
A pair and a half of hydraulic disc brakes.
A mechanical disc brake.
An A headset
Two stems.
A cheap handle bar.
A new pair of grips.
A pair of flat pedals.
And a couple of Raceface chainrings.
page26_4
That’s quite a list of bits just to be sat around doing nothing ‘It would be a waste not to put them all together and build another bike’ I tell my girlfriend.

So as she continues the cleaning, I make a quick list of what I need to complete the bike and choose which parts I found I would actually use.
At the moment I have two bikes a single speed do everything bike I absolutely love to ride and my D/H bike I very rarely use at its just to heavy and the mountains here don’t do it justice. What I need is an in between bike something light (ish
) And strong that will ride uphill as well as it does down them. 5 inches of travel would be nice (front and rear) and maybe a full set of gears.
A lot of the things I found I probably wont use, I’ll either try to sell them or swap them for other parts.

The things I will use are.

Grips
Chain
Cassette (8 speed so the bike will be 24 speed, maybe)
The hubs from the wheels.
The tyres
One of the stems
Ahead set.

The rest of the parts I will try and sell or trade.

I checked through Taobao, the Chinese version of EBay for about a week and found this
idrive

A GT I-Drive 6.0

750 RMB.

The I-Drive has around 4 inches of travel so a little less than I planned on but for the price I couldn’t resist!

So my running total for this week is: 750 RMB

Keep posted for updates!

Now there's no excuse not to go riding in the snow!!(or sand)
page15_1
Ktrak, a Canadian (?) based company has released this interesting add on for your bike.
The $400 ($540 w/front ski) kit converts almost any brand of frame in to a half-track snow/sand going mountain bike! The track apparently provides 25% more traction than a standard rear wheel, ideal for off piste riding (?!!).
The kit includes a composite rear wheel, which can work with either ‘V’ brakes or 6 bolt discs. An aluminum frame and a reinforced polyurethane track.
Installation is said to be as quick as fitting a standard rear wheel and no special tools are required.

The optional front ski attachment “will further enhance the snow bike experience” says the Ktrak website.

The whole kit weighs in at around 5 pounds and they even have kits for 20’ and 24’wheeled bikes (sorry road bike riders no 700c)

Check out www.ktrakcycle.com for more info and some videos of the kit in action.
