Laoshan Mountain Bike Course completed
Laoshan Bike Track
photo: Xinhua

The extension work for Laoshan Mountain Bike Course completed recently and held host to the "Good Luck Beijing" 2007 International Mountain Bike Invitational Competition on September 22.

The construction of the course makes use of the natural landscape of Laoshan Mountain. Concrete and steel weren’t used in the track construction, but instead weaving bags filled with soil were used to create the various banks and hills.

The 4.6 kilometer course is shorter that originally planned as technical officials at the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) suggested that the Laoshan course should be shortened and made more difficult to increase the enjoyment for the spectators and the riders.

Laoshan used to be the training center for China's national cycling team. After the Olympic Games, the 4.6 kilometer Mountain Bike Course will be open to the general public.

Liu Ying Wins at Good Luck Beijing International Mountain Bike Race!
Source: ChinaView
Liu Ying

Liu Ying of China won the women's cross country at the 2007 Good Luck Beijing international mountain bike invitational competition here on Saturday.

The newly crowned world champion demonstrated her speed and endurance to win the gold in one hour 45 minutes and 54 seconds.

"The course was really hard. You have to slow down your speed at every turn. I was familiar with this course, so I took some advantage over some foreign riders," said Liu, who just won the title of the World Cup last week.

The highest elevation of the course is said to be 130 meters, and the total length is about 4.52 kilometers, with the minimum width being 2.5 meters and maximum 8 meters respectively, averaged at 3-3.5 meters. The entire space of the course's peripheral area reaches 5 kilometers.

One year from now on, cyclists will compete in the same course in the Beijing Olympics.

"I hope I could get the chance to race in the same course here in 2008. I will try my best to get a good result," added Liu.

Athens Olympic bronze medallist Sabine Spitz of Germany claimed the silver in 1:47:18.

"I like the course, it challenged all riders, because it was really difficult to keep the speed in this kind of bumpy course with high altitude," said Spitz.

The 36-year old rider said her next goal would be the Beijing Olympic Games and hope she could attend the London Olympic Games.

"I did not have any specific goal for the Beijing Olympics, but I will try my best to compete and hope I could ride as long as I can and come to London," added Spitz.

The bronze medal went to Lene Byberg of Norway in 1:47:28.

As an official event of "Good Luck Beijing" series, the race attracts 81 first-class riders from 16 countries and regions, and 24 female riders competed on the day.

210km/h Mountain Bike Speed Record!!

mountain bike speed record

Max Stöckl and his Intense M6 recorded a speed of 210.4 KM/H or 130.74 MP/H on a 1.6 kilometer snow covered slope with declines of up to 45 degrees. The speed was enough to beat the previous record by 23 KM/H , which had remained unbeaten for the past 8 years. The 28 year old Austrian rode the M6 faster than any person has ever ridden a production mountain bike, and now hopes to beat the speed record set for prototype bikes.

2008 T-Force Forks
Xcaliber
We reported on the 2008 range of T-Force forks earlier this year. T-Force is a sub brand of Topgun Suspension who are well known for their OEM forks found on $99 Walmart bikes! The T-Force brand was formed so Topgun could build higher end forks without people relating them to their bargain basement bottom of the bucket brothers.
The forks most riders will be interested in are the Xcalibur range. The X Calibur forks range from 80mm-120mm travel all mountain forks to 120mm-160mm travel freeride forks, all of which are single crown.
The lower end XCalibur SX forks are beginning to trickle on to the market now and start at a very reasonable 1300 RMB, and sport some great features such as adjustable rebound and compression, lockout, external travel adjustment from 80mm-120mm, 32mm magnesium lowers and an alloy steerer.

No news on when the DH models will be available but be sure you will be the first to know.

Yaban Mack Half Link Chain On Test
The excellent folks at Yaban Chains sent us these half link chains to test (thanks David). We only received them yesterday night so we haven't had anytime riding them yet. The half link is designed for single speed riders, the design means you can get the perfect chain length, tension and also wheel base, on your sliding dropout frames.
I've been really looking forward to getting my hands on these chains as I have not been happy with how long the wheel base is on my Banshee Sratch, but due to its design and the gearing I run (32/16) I couldn't get the chain shorter.
But, now I have this half link I can dial my Banshee in properly and start to enjoy it more.
Keep posted for a full test soon.

WATCH SEASON 5 OF DROP IN HERE:

The Drop In Crew Left a 4th and 7th place at the Kokanee Slopestyle, some fresh road rash, and hang overs all around & piloted the bus out of the Crankworx scene in Whistler heading south and west to Vancouver Island to hook up with the entire slopestyle mountain biking community once again at the 2nd annual Bearclaw Invitational. Romaniuk loved the DH singletrack trail system up at Mt Washington and shredded trails the entire time, McCaul had the best slopestyle run of his life while Ross crashes HARD.
After the Mt Washington stop the Crew officially heads south for the U.S. border hitting up some skate parks along the way. It's a pretty tech crew this year and everyone can hold their own in the park including Jamie Goldman who joins the Crew as a full time rider for the tour, Neil Meier has a guest appearance in season 3 and hosts the crew once again in Nanaimo as does Geoff Gullevich in North Vancouver. Dylan Tremblay is finally back on the bike after sitting the first episode out due to a sprained ankle!
Lot's of bouncing around and head bangin' in this webisode that will be sure to leave you begging for more!

Possible Singletrack Sighting In Qingdao!
Well the Fushan tracks we mentioned the other week were tested and after 3 hours of rock climbing with my 35 pound Banshee I can report we managed about 20 minutes worth of riding. This was due to a number of reasons: Firstly the Google map turned out to be about 2 years out of date! And secondly most of the lower singletrack has been rendered unridable due to the recent rain and floods.
So the search was still on. Luckily while I was out on one of my little jaunts today I came across a nice looking area with plenty of smaller hills and mountains, which have really easy access. I walked up a paved track for about 5 min and came upon some singletrack that runs along the ridge of a range of hills and small mountains.
I will try and take some photos tomorrow, but in the mean time check out the little map I made. If you look toward the top right you will notice a few more tracks that might be worth riding too.

Merida's 19.8 Pound XC Weapon!
MERIDA - PRESS RELEASE!

Project-Bike: MERIDA Beijing 08 superlight XC Suspension
EB07highlights_merida_cl
Even when we talk about a 2009 project:
MERIDA presented a close-to-production prototype of the new carbon full-suspension race-bike at this years Eurobike-fair, which will be used as secret weapon from the MULTIVAN-MERIDA top-racers Ralph Näf and José Hermida already one week later during the XC world championship at Ft. Williams at their fight for the world title.

We took «Beijing 08» as project-name for this frame, because the team-racers of our MULTIVAN MERIDA BIKING TEAMS shall fight with this weapon during the coming Olympic Games for medals.
Manufactured in cooperation with a new manufacturing-partner completely of a high-end fiber-mix, the new carbon-frame undergoes a frame-weight of 1,9 kg – including the special tuned DT Swiss carbon rear-shock with remote controlled lock-out function.

Using a smart mix of regular production components, the bike beats the magic border of 9 kg – with roughly 100mm suspension travel, remote lock-out suspension and disc-brakes!

Not just this flashing weight surprises, as well at the STW (stiffness to weight) ratio, the new MERIDA frame is offering a new reference for the whole competition: It is beating the most famous and lightweight frame today available at the market significantly, by offering a 25% higher STW-factor*!

What is also result of some hidden, internal features of the carbon-construction, which we will not tell to anyone at this early moment…

The kinematics of the system, including some slight readjustment of the main suspension pivot was optimized according to the demand of our racers and offers a maximum travel of 95 mm, while using the low suspension ratio (below 1 : 2) - a typical character for MERIDA XC-suspension bikes, which reduces the air-pressure inside the shock to a user-friendly range from 2-5 atmospheres.

Top-racer und weight-saving freak Ralph Naef had been involved closely to the development of this new suspension-frame; he already rode hundreds of kilometers on prototypes and influenced many details in a major way.

His statement after the first rides pushing his new working-tool: «While blocking the suspension, this bike feels being stiffer than my rigid carbon frame – and believe me: May hardtail is really stiff. It runs that speedy, that I have problems to break down quick enough in front of corners…that is something, where I need to get used to.»

*The so far best performing competitor’s production-frame and the new MERIDA «Beijing 08» prototype were tested by using the same frame-sizes, incl original rear-shock, at a neutral test-lab according to original «Tour» / «Bike» STW testing method.

Da Bomb Release the Bouncing Betty!
pro_projectile_a01big
Huh?!

That's what our regular chinamtb readers will be thinking. The Bouncing Betty has finally arrived, but its nothing like what previous photos depicted, or what we hoped it would be like.
For those of you who don't know, or can't remember the original plan was for the Betty to have a main frame mounted gear box supplied by Suntour. Unfortunately Suntour had a few problems suppling the G Boxx and it looks like Da Bomb went back to the drawing board!
Click here to see the original Bouncing Betty.
The 'New' Bouncing Betty is described by Da Bomb as being their 'World Cup' frame and features everything you would expect from such a racer, such as chain guide mounts , 150mm rear hub spacing and 9 inches of rear wheel travel.

Here's what Da Bomb have to say about there flagship downhill frame:

"Betty is our DH/FR baby. She likes it rough and she will take you anywhere you want to go. With 9¨ of travel, she can take what you can dish out. To be honest I doubt you could handle her. Her rear is setup with a Horst pivot and a heavy duty Compression Reactive Chainstay. Saint compatible it because extreme rides need tough components. We also incorporated a multiple location shock mount for those of you who just can't leave things stock."

Da Bomb Design Double-Butted 7005 Tubing
83mm width B.B shell & I.S.C.G Chain Guide Mount
150mm width Rear Hub
Rear Shock :

L-222 x TR70 x M8 (FW22.2+RW52.0)
Size :

S-15.5¨ (C-C)

Check out the Da Bomb website for more info.
